Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation

Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation is the required outdoor training for all Cub Packs that would like to do overnight camping as part of their pack activities. At least one leader of the activity must be BALOO Trained in order for it to be an authorized Scouting activity. All leaders eager to have a great pack outdoors program would be good fits for BALOO training.

Learning Objectives

The goal of this pack outdoor experience is to provide a successful outing that is fun while being based on the principles of Cub Scouting. At BALOO you will learn about:

  • The aims and purposes of the BSA progressive camping program
  • How to plan a pack outdoor experience
  • The Cub Scout Outdoor Essentials list of equipment
  • Different kinds of sleeping bags
  • The best types of tents for Cub Scout camping
  • Planning successful and fun campfire programs
  • Building safe campfires
  • The CAMPING safety program
  • Age appropriate worship services
  • Cooking in the outdoors
  • Stoves and Lanterns
  • First aid
  • Sanitation in camp
  • Nature hikes
  • Outdoor games

Items to Bring with You

The list of what to bring is pretty minimal, mostly what you feel you need to be comfortable:

Tent, Ground cloth

Sleeping bag with pad, mattress, or cot

Flashlight or lantern

Scout Uniform

Weather appropriate clothing

Personal hygiene items

Camp/Lawn chair – Sessions will be held around the campfire ring and at other locations around camp, seating is not available for everyone at every location

Notepad, pen or pencil

Water bottle

Cup – for coffee/tea etc.

Mess kit – plate/bowl, eating utensils (disposable plates, cups and utensils will be available also)

Boots/shoes – appropriate for camping

Any other camping items you feel are necessary for your comfort
