Boy Scout Training

Training for Boy Scout leaders comes in several parts, most of which can be completed in the comfort of your own home, on the internet at olc.scouting.org

Step 1 | This is Scouting
an online workshop that gives you a little history and overview of Scouting as an organization and its structure.
 

Step 2 | Fast Start
Pick the Fast Start that is right for you (Scoutmaster, or Troop Committee). This will give you the info you need to get through your first couple of  meetings. Online at olc.scouting.org
 

Step 3 | Youth Protection
This is the BSA’s child Abuse recognition and prevention training for all adult volunteers. Learn to recognize the signs of abuse, how to respond when you learn a child is being abused and how to ensure that abuse does not take place at Scout meetings and activities. MANDATORY for all Scouting volunteers . Online at olc.scouting.org
 

Step 4 | Job Specific Training
For Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmaster this one day workshop covers the Boy Scout basics including advancement, the patrol method, planning meetings, campouts and how to work Scouts and parents. Troop committee members can take the online Troop Committee challenge (about 45 minutes to complete) or can attend a group session on Troop Committee challenge (about 2 hours).  View course
 

Step 5 | Outdoor Training
Learn the basics of Boy Scout camping, knots and lashings, fire-building, ax, knife and saw safety, map and compass, campfire and camp stove cooking. This overnight hands on workshop is a must for everyone who takes Scouts camping. Courses begin on Friday evenings and conclude on Saturday evenings. Schedule of Courses to come soon!

Boy Scout Leader Outdoor Training                        September 24-25 | @ Tunnel Mill Scout Reservation
Boy Scout Outdoor Skills is a fun, hands-on training designed to give adult leaders the practical skills they need to lead Scouts in the outdoors. Topics covered include patrol method, cooking, orienteering, campfires, Leave No Trave, first fid, knots, packing/hiking techniques, camp site preparation, animal/plant identifications, wood tools and much more!

Wood Badge SR1071                                                    September 24-26 & October 22-24
The most advanced adult leader training available. A Scouter participating in Wood Badge has the opportunity to understand Scouting as a family of interrelated, values-based programs providing age-appropriate activities for youth; recognize contemporary leadership concepts and discover how they are relevant to the Scouting movement; apply the skills learned as a member of a successful working team; and revitalize their commitment to Scouting by sharing in an inspirational experience that provides Scouting with renewed leadership. Powder Horn                                                                May 19-21, 2011 & June 2-4, 2011
Powder Horn is a training opportunity designed to expose the Venturing or Boy Scout leader to activities and resources necessary to operate a successful Venturing Ranger Award or Troop High Adventure program in several ways:

  • Help Venturing Leaders and Scouters to safely conduct outdoor activities of a fun and challenging nature.
  • Provides an introduction to the resources necessary to successfully lead their Venturers and older Boy Scouts through a program of high adventure.
  • Familiarizes the Advisor with the Ranger program so that he or she can help the Venturer to meet the requirements of the Ranger Award.
  • This course is based on the Venturing Ranger requirements giving participants an exposure to outdoor/high adventure activities.

Powder Horn courses include Ranger Core Requirements, at least Ten Electives, plus additional program development information. For more information on requirements click here.
